Are plug-in heaters safe? A UK checklist

Desk research, not a hands-on test · Last reviewed · Disclosure

Plug-in heaters are safe when they're properly made and used correctly. But cheap imports sold online don't always meet UK standards. Use this checklist before you buy any heater, including the Keilini Heater Pro.

What happened with Keilini heaters

In 2023, Electrical Safety First bought a Keilini heater from an online ad. It came with an EU plug and an unfused UK travel adaptor, which the charity said was a fire risk. We don't know if this applies to today's Heater Pro, so ask the seller before you order.

The current seller lists a tip-over switch, thermostat and timer, but these are not independently tested safety assurances. Its specifications page does not document an overheat cut-out. A timer does not make unattended or overnight use safe.

Frequently asked questions

›

Are plug-in heaters safe to leave on overnight?

Safety charities advise against leaving portable heaters running while you sleep or when unattended.

›

Is the Keilini Heater Pro safe?

The current seller lists a tip-over switch and says units are supplied for UK use, but we have not independently tested these claims or confirmed a fused BS 1363 plug. A different Keilini-branded heater tested in 2023 had an EU plug and an unfused adaptor. That finding has not been linked to this Pro model.

›

Can I plug a heater into an extension lead?

It's best to plug heaters straight into a wall socket. They draw a lot of current, which can overload extension leads.

›

What safety features should a heater have?

Look for a fused UK three-pin plug, overheat cut-out, tip-over switch, UKCA or CE marking with a traceable maker, and a clear instruction manual.
